The National School Iden closed in 1936 and the pupils went down to Playden. I live in the old school and can find no record of a clock being presented but I will ask around as there are people here who went to the school

Can anyone tell me about Iden School. My interest is a one-handed clock with an unusual dial (infact, a Benjamin Franklin clock) which is now in the north transept of Northiam Church. It has the maker’s name on the dial – J (Jesse?) Gilbert of Northiam and was probably made about 1803. The dial is white with black numerals, and is about 24 inches in diameter.
It is thought that this clock was presented to the church by Iden School, probably some 30 or 40 years ago. There is also a suggestion that there was some sort of charitable trust between the school and the church. Is / was there a school in Iden? If it has closed when did this occur? Does anyone remember the clock? Can anyone confirm or even add to the above information?
Please contact me via my email address.
Many thanks in anticipation. Robert Ovens, clockmaker, MBHI.
